my old boss (mechanic) told me that around 70k was a good time...other may disagree and chime in

as for other maintance, look into changing the water pump around the time of the timing belt...if not sooner

Replaced mine at 103,000. It didn't break, just wanted to be safe. Should have done it between 70K to 90K. With only 45K don't worry about it!!

I say no more then 80k. Gates recommends 60k. Timing belts have a bad habbit of breaking at the wrong time. like when your 80miles from home. If you do only intown driving then I would say drive it till it snaps. But (don't know for sure) some say this will harm the engine if the belt breaks while running and you get bent valves.

Mileage adds to wearout of the belt but also weather extream cold/heat and so on add to the factor of life of the belt.

The newer belts (v-groove,felt) will last 120k+ miles.
If its the original, replace between 60k-75k miles.

I just changed the original belt in mine recently at 110k ..... good timing considering the belt was about to snap.

Talked to several local shops who work heavily on Fords and they recommend changing the belt on Contours every 70k to 90k to be safe.
