I know this was posted earlier but I cant remember who said it to quote him. Alot is not a word. A lot is a word. When spelling this word all you have to do is this, A(Space)lot. I had an English teacher in the 10th grade, and every day when class started she would come in the room and say A lot is two words not one. She had a poster made and hung it on the wall and it said the same thing.
