the whirr for a second is the priming of the system.. tells you the pump works... as does the pressure regulator.
Check spark. (verify spark at the plugs)
Check your coil pack
Make sure the timing is correct on the car.
A little pre-problem history would help.. it happened SUDDENLY or what?
