Hi,

I have a 95 Contour SE auto transmission that won't go foward. It will only go in reverse. Is this a transmission problem? Is there anything I can do first before I take it to a shop? Like change the tranny filter? My son is very mechanical.

Thanks!

No, my son has his own two cars.

So it is the tranny? Is there any test we can do? Approx. how much should it cost to fix? Is it worth fixing this old of a car? Sorry for all the questions. I'm afraid I have a distrust of auto mechanics. I've paid for many repairs that didn't fix the problem and I don't know any mechanics that I feel I can trust right now.

It might be the transmission range switch, it is on the top of the trans near the battery. My Dad's 1993 Sable skipped reverse because of the switch. I would try one of those. Cheaper and easier than changing the trans or car.

And you might as well change the ATF ($30) after changing the range switch too.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and directions!

Is the switch easy to replace? Will how to change it be obvious to my son? Also...I found the directions for the 'Electronic Engin Control self test'. I was going to have my son do this test too. It says to "hook up light and jumper(or a tester if you have one)". I don't have a tester but I don't understand, what is a light and jumper?

Jumper- use paper clip (or wire) to connect the two test connectors. Light - any auto light bulb and wire. The goal is to watch the flashes (or movement on the meter) to read the codes. 3 flashes 3 flashes 2 flashes equate to a 332 code (EGR issue). Or buy a test light ($5) from the autoshops.
