Just threw a P420, bank 2 cat. Time for headers! or at least some MIL eliminators and maybe a "clearing" of the cats

P0420 is Bank 1 (next to firewall).
In addition, if Michigan has smog emission tests, it might be a good idea not to gut the pre-cats. I just installed the Mileliminators and left the pre-cats alone. Will know in May 2006 if it will pass emissions in Northern VA.

assuming a healthy cat, gutted precats won't affect inspection. Precats are used on a colder engine.. the CAT on warm engines.
Make sure your engine is fully warm and you'll be fine.
Californians have passed their rigorous inspections with gutted precats...

I saw a TSB when researching this problem. It appears that in some instances tha CAT may not be bad; the PCM may need to be reprogrammed. My DTC cleared up without doing anything.

The pre-cat could be going bad. The TSB just advises the reprogramming of the PCM to widen the band (limits) so that the CEL is not lighted up as early. Your DTC clearing up could be a different issue(as could his).

You're right for the most part. The pre-cats are used to reduce cold-start emissions. When you first turn on your car your main cat doesnt heat up as fast as the pre-cats.
