I'm in desperate need to get my cat replaced due to a revving tach and a God aweful smell eminating from within the car.

I've looked at the manufacturers and am undecided on which one to go with. Some sell only a universal cat that needs to be welded(I would like not to have this done) and I'm not sure about the quality of the other cats.

Can someone give me a direction on which manufacturer I should go with.

Thanks

Ford's Emission Warranty is 8yrs or 80k miles. If your under that take it to Ford.

what's a cat?

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Excuse me for hijacking your thread but since its on the topic...How do you know exactly when your cat is going out? Lately, my CEL has came on for a bit and then when out. It kinda does it randomly. Also, some days it seems like my exhaust doesn't even exist. Its so quiet I can only hear the engine. Anybody know?

Scan the CEL (even though it is not lighted) and post in Troubleshooting. It could be something about to go (not necessarily the catalytic converters) but you won't know until you have the codes.

This description is not an indication that you need a cat. By the way, there are three cats on your V6.

I had a code come on not too long ago and got it checked at Advance Auto. It said something like bad EGR. All I did is clean the air filter and it hasn't come back on. The revving engine is something new though. The sulphur/ rotten egg smell has been there for awhile and seems to be getting worse. The smell starts after running the engine a bit. The smell is very noticeable.

I would like to find out what I could do to get rid of this but all I'm ever told is that the converter is going bad and soon the car may back fire due to built up pressure. Also people seem to think on here that it isn't the(a) converter but never give any info on what it could be.

Mostly I have no idea and need some expert advise.

You wanna find out what it is?

Remove the downstream o2's and start the car. (not permanently, just a test) If the car runs the same, then the "clog" (if there is one) is before the downstreams, if it clears up, then it was after the downstreams, and the exhaust used the new place to leave.

You could have your emissions tested to definitively determine the cat's health.
