I agree. I saw a TV program a few days ago which mentioned something to the effect of; with hotter sea water temperatures, the hurricanes get more intense.

From what I've read in at least one newspaper and have seen from the weather channel, global warming has little to nothing to do with the hurricanes this year.

We've had TWO large hurricanes this year, and we're technically later into hurricane season.

We have experienced far more hurricanes in the past- the 1930's I believe were particularly pretty rough.

But, let's also remember that natural disasters are NOT occuring at a much higher rate- we simply have the means with which to track them farther, and have more people living in areas where they were previously unpopulated.

Ah yes...the 'ignorant' comment again. Gotta love arguments where that comes up. Usually when someone says "blah blah blah, and if you don't think that then you're ignorant", it is a clear indication that they have nothing.

If these were the first (or most) intense hurricanes we've ever had, I'd be more likely to think "wow, these hurricanes are getting quite intense" than "gosh darn global warming is making hurricanes more intense". The reality is that this is a normal hurricane season, and we're seeing hurricanes that are more or less normally intense. Every year that we have a few hurricanes hit populated areas, everyone starts yelling about how we're having so many hurricanes and Big Oil is the reason.

Oh, 'scientists' said global warming caused by George Bush is created more intense hurricanes? Okay, I believe it.

And plenty of scientists (including the Weather Channel and National Hurricane Center people) disagree. Its part of the worlds natural cycle of things. This cycle happened in the 1930's, and again in the 1960's (when we recorded two of the 5 worst hurricanes ever).

On a side note, I happened to remember that SA has TransGuide, and that Houston installed something like it. Well, I remembered that TransGuide had a nice website showing real-time traffic conditions and cameras, so I did some Googling and this is what I found:

http://www.houstontranstar.org/

Real-time Traffic Map: http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/

Traffic Cameras:
http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/layers.aspx?mapname=harris_all&inc=True&cam=True

The current speed map shows many areas of the city headed out are only going 20mph or so. I also saw on the SA TransGuide page that I-10 East is closed past Seguin.

Good luck to those needing to get out.

Well look what's happending to the Polar Bear population. Because of rising temperatures Greenland's ice fields form later and recede earlier in the season every year. To get through the summer of fasting the bears have to really layer on the fat before the ice breaks up. So if that (breakup) gets shortened by two or three weeks, that's a lot of fat they don't get to store. These days breakup is, on average, 10 to 14 days earlier than a couple of decades ago. Not only are more cubs dying but the birth rate has dropped 15%. Temperatures in western Hudson Bay have been steadily rising 0.3 to 0.4 degrees every decade since 1950. Some researchers concluded that some Arctic areas have warmed 10 times as fast as the world as a whole, which has warmed an average of 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past century. If this continues we are in for a rude awkening! You don't have to give a name like Global Warming if that makes you feel better but this is what is occuring.
