OK, I attend the salvage auctions frequently and every once in a while there is a car that makes you take a step back and say HOLY S**T! This one is a 97 Contour Sport so I thought some of you would be interested. It's a 4 cylinder so you know it wasn't going 120MPH! I started going to the auctions 10 years ago and its really made we think twice about horsing around in a car. Real life isn't like the movies! When my son is old enough to drive he'll be going to the auctions with me to see the cars that never make it to the dismantlers because they're only good for scrap. This isn't the worse car I've seen by any means, but it's a Contour and this is a Contour forum.

I'll be the first.. It'll rub out. Man, that poor tour' was asking for a painful ending, the hood color doesn't match th efenders, which doesn't match the bumper... Hmm. Drivers side headlight still looks good. So, do you just head to these auctions, buy good deals (cars) and aprt them out? Seems like a neat side job.

Most of the cars I buy I rebuild. The typical car I buy is like th one pictured below. To me it's an easy fix, but when a body shop gets ahold of it it becomes a $4,000. job. The one below is a 96 LX V6 loaded with 50K miles on it. I fixed it in 1 day. No frame damage and the bags were good. The insurance estimate was $3200. so they totaled it. The most expensive part for me was the paint which was $150. for 3/4 of a pint + clear and other paint supplies. I buy parts cars to repair the rebuildable ones and the parts I sell are the left overs. It use to be more of a side business, but now I mostly just rebuild a car to use for a commuter car then sell it after 10-20K miles. Usually that is about 6 months. Lots of trips from Albany-NYC and out to Boston! I'm a buyer for my friends dealership so I can go to the wholesale and salvage auctions anytime I want. Keeps me out of trouble and away fromt he nagging women!

When I hit my deerit looked a little worse than that and I fixed it up under $1000, and that was for a parts car and a new ppg windshield. http://www.cardomain.com/profile/elraidoI don't see how they could get $3000 out of that.

Thats really cool! DO you do all the work yourself? I've been contemplating taken up doing something like this on the side. Buying some easy fixers, fix them up and sell them off. I enjoy that kind of work, since of satisfaction to bring a dinged up ride back to nice, and make a msall penny of two doing it.

yes, I do all of the work myself. I've been doing body and engine work on the side for about 17 years. There's a lot to know about painting, but the rest of the work is fairly straight forward. I have a small puller, but I try to stay away from cars with anything more than radiator support damage. Selling them isn't always easy because NYS brands the title "salvage" which scares some people away. I show before pictures to lure them back. I have an advantage because I buy cheap (in most cases), do all of the work myself, usually I have parts cars so I don't need to buy new parts and I drive the cars for a while (for work, which is deducable) so I'm not putting everyday mileage on my other cars. Because of all of that I can usually sell the cars very cheap compared to other front yard car salesmen. I usually make a few bucks, but if I break even it's ok because I've driven the car for a while and have already made money with it by way of a tax deduction for my mileage.
These days I've been buying cars with bad engines since I have so many low mileage engines sitting around. The Contour is getting old enough where it's getting to the point of not being worth repairing some of the wrecks that I normally would've fixed. I can drop an engine in in a day and be done with it AND have a clean title car. Body work takes several days especially if paint is involved.

geez, why is that contour even in a junkyard. Theres nothing even salvagable on that car. Might as well just send it straight to the crusher.
