I also happened across this article, which may well be what you were thinking of: http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=1801 - but it's a first-gen WRX with $13k in upgrades.
A friend of mine who has a '98 Vette (~13.5 sec 1/4 mile) called me up one night asking if I knew of any "import grocery getters" off hand that are really fast. I said "Yeah, the WRX STi or Mitsibushi Evo".. He said "I think it was an STi.. F'ing thing blew my doors off! Twice!" He really didn't enjoy hearing that it has a 2.0L 4-banger. He later ended up talking to the owner and found that it has quite a few upgrades.. They're cool cars.
ok i double checked because that didn't sound right they are turbo charged 2.0l 4-bangers of corse unless it was bored out or something don't get me wrong svt guy's I love the cobra but with these gas prices getting higher the sti is starting to look more atractive not that the sti ever didn't look atractive though
The regular WRX is a 2.0L the STi is a 2.5L. I hear that for 2006?? both WRX and Sti will have the 2.5L's
interesting i didn't know that thanks for letting me know so i don't spread the wrong info around

Gas milage on the STi isnt all that much better than a Cobra. Think on that for a bit. engine size has no correlation to fuel consumption.
your right but if you stay outa the gas you might get some good mileage but thats any car
