would someone please help me find the OFFICIAL articles on the STi besting the Cobra in the 1/4 mile. We're having a debate at work and all I hear from this guy is the cobra has lower 1/4 times, the cobra has lower 1/4 times, but I distinctly remember an article by a reputable magazine where it lost by around .1 or .01 second. either way, it lost. don't get my wrong, SVT is great, but I'm just trying to clear this up... and hopefully be right

What year Cobra? I'm assuming you mean the 03+ Cobra's SC'd from the factory. Sure the ET's might be close because of the STi's AWD but look at the trap speeds. Most STi's I've seen trap 102-104 stock, Cobra's will push over 110MPH stock easily. On a roll race there's no comparison really, the Cobra will pull away handily. In the 1/4 it'll play catchup from the launch but will pass the STi before the end of the 1/4.

I also happened across this article, which may well be what you were thinking of: http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=1801 - but it's a first-gen WRX with $13k in upgrades.
A friend of mine who has a '98 Vette (~13.5 sec 1/4 mile) called me up one night asking if I knew of any "import grocery getters" off hand that are really fast. I said "Yeah, the WRX STi or Mitsibushi Evo".. He said "I think it was an STi.. F'ing thing blew my doors off! Twice!" He really didn't enjoy hearing that it has a 2.0L 4-banger. He later ended up talking to the owner and found that it has quite a few upgrades.. They're cool cars.
ok i double checked because that didn't sound right
they are turbo charged 2.0l 4-bangers of corse unless it was bored out or something
don't get me wrong svt guy's I love the cobra but with these gas prices getting higher the sti is starting to look more atractive not that the sti ever didn't look atractive though

The regular WRX is a 2.0L the STi is a 2.5L. I hear that for 2006?? both WRX and Sti will have the 2.5L's

Gas milage on the STi isnt all that much better than a Cobra. Think on that for a bit. engine size has no correlation to fuel consumption.

If you stay off of it that Cobra will probably get better mileage than that STi -- i.e. why a 6.0L Corvette can easily get 30mpg on the freeway. That's what incredible amounts of torque at very low RPMs does for you.
At any rate the difference is negligible and certainly not sufficient enough to warrant factoring it into any decisions.

WRXs actually get sort of BAD gas mileage.
98.5 SVT
91 Escort GT (almost sold)
96 ATX Zetec (i brake to watch you swerve)
FS: SVT rear sway bar
WTB: Very cheap beater

Correct, a detuned version of the 2.5L will/is shipping in the 06 WRX.
On the gas mileage comments, most large I4's don't do well with gas mileage, like a 2.5L for instance. If you stay off the go pedal entirely and keep it under 3k RPM at all times, you'll see better around town mileage than the Cobra will see, however highway will be very similar. I wouldn't let gas mileage be a factor in looking at comparing these cars. The AWD with the Subbie is nice if you have to deal with inclement weather on any kind of frequent basis. For stoplight street races, the STi's are very difficult to beat.
