Please check the CD4E FAQ's, because I have a link in there to a rebuild that BT did himself. It is very informative!!

Hey fastcougar... whatever happened to that CD4E rebuild page you was putting together? Is it coming along?

Cracked drum or pump. That sound serious, is it a major overhal. Are these parts prone to sudden failure. This tranny was working fine on Sat., O/D, Sport, Cruise...freeway and normal street driving. Sunday AM it croaks. Put it in D and rev to about 3K and it catches D and goes for about 100 yards. Then nothing until it cools down. So it's just parked. Never showed any sign of failure before that moment.

I say cracked drum because what you describe is massive hydraulic fluid pressure drop. This is caused by only 3 things in an automatic transmission:

1) Major leak around seal/bushing
2) Crack in drums/assyemblies
3) Fualting oil pump

All of which requires a full teardown to find the culprit and rebuild accordingly. Considering the cost to replace "hard parts", I would opt to purchase a rebuilt transmission from the likes of Pheonix or the like.

What would you expect to pay for a rebuilt from Phoenix etc?

Edit: eBay Auction for Pheonix Hard Parts Transmission $825 + $350 (refundable core) + $260 shipping = $1,435 ($350 refundable)

You mention 3 failure points. Are these parts prone to sudden failure with out prior symptoms or warning. It was fine one day and the next it was gone, with no hard driving involved

I had a drum go in my 98 Tour SE ATX... same symptoms you're describing. One day it's good to go, the next I'm driving and it just slips and slips and then nothing. I got a rebuild done on mine to the tune of about $1200 CAD... but it was a cash deal. I'd get it looked at though, if you're not to inclined with a wrench you'll probably want to avoid trying a rebuild yourself. It can get ugly in there.
