I have changed my oils, and change them every 3000. I put new spark plugs and 2 new 02 sensors since I got a code for it. Ive done about 200 miles on half tank, but the problem is that after half tank it seems to go faster. Anybody know why that is so??

I think it's the gauges, they're set to go down less at first to give the impression that you're getting better mileage, so I've heard.

I've gotten 150 before 1/4 tank, and 300 at half once, but at the "E" mark I'm at 400+, and I put about 12 gallons in when it's on "E".
So it can't be accurate, cuz it's a 14 gallon tank, and that would mean that I couldn't even go 200 miles after 1/2.

I'm kind of curious if the fuel gauge reader can be replaced? I've seen fuel pumps on some cars where the fuel pump and the fuel level thingy were kinda hooked together, I wonder if you could get an aftermarket one that would be more accurate.

Oh and btw, I'm jealous that you have a silver frost zetec, I like that color. I have a green lx, not sure which color green but I like green so I guess I'm happy lol.

IIRC, its because of the way the tank is shaped. Bigger at the top, and smaller at the bottom. therefore the gas level goes down faster at the bottom.

Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Someone recently stated of a knowledge of programming of the fuel sender or guage.. people were complaining of poor mileage so it was programmed to go down slower at first, then faster at the end to make up for the slow period.

Not that I jumped all over the theory, just telling what I read.

Peter thanx ... keep yours clean.

Ray, is it possible to put a tank that has the same shape all around?

That would be another fellow CEGer and me. Here is a link to how fuel tanks work.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-gauge1.htm

Read on to the part to where they talk about the microprocessor and tinkering with it. The other fellow CEGer (I can't remember his screename) said he read in a magazine (maybe Popular Mechanics? I'm getting old ) about fuel tanks and I remember reading an article some years ago about either GM or Ford who got complaints from their customers about bad gas mileage and they reprogrammed the computers and the complaints were reduced significantly.

My 98 seems to be normal. I've got a build date of June 97. I went on a roadtrip and averaged 150Kms per 1/4 tank and I remember the last 1/4 wasn't exceptionally fast. (Maybe because I was running low and my next stops were usually far away, so I was counting the kms and watching that needle like a hank on mice!) I haven't calc. the MPG but I got ~670Kms in one tank.

my first quarter tank seems to go pretty slow always see about 100 or so miles. 200 is pretty normal for half tank then is drops really fast after that, leaveing about 350 maybe 400 if I push, just about always put in 12.5 gal or so too
