So, yesterday at work, the HR Manager pulls all of the office staff together for a meeting, a quick one she says. She hands us all a memo from the owner/ President that says stuff about Katrina and the impact it has had on Gas prices and how he wanted to do something for us (as employees), but couldn't becuase we were employees. Being discouraged by the tax liability we would incur by any gifts, he personnaly bought every employee a $40 gas gift card to Quik Trip (QT). Not only that, but the card will be recharged every off-payday week (except for the week we get our Christams bouns)for the remainder of the year. This will total $280! The memo goes to emphasise that this is a personnal gift, and that he will take all related tax liability. We are a small company, we have bout 250 employees. We figure the total to be about $70,000! If an employee is terminated or resigns, teh card will not be recharged any further. Our comapny is not doing bad by any means, business is booming. He has been doing alot of things for employee moral lately, like having a company day at the local amusement park and minor league ball park, but this is by far the coolest. I have been with the company for almost 8 years and this just started in teh past 6 months, but I think it is a major boost for moral and shows signs that he may actually care for about his employees. This was just such a surpirse and so cool I had to share!

We already get a car allowance, so it's not likely to go up anytime soon. Of course we are also in cost-cutting mode.
Somehow that dovetails with what is going on, so in the past couple of years my employer has picked up 75% of my ISP, taken over my cell plan, and replaced my pager and cell phone with a Treo 600 to do both functions.
Now, I work from home 2-3 days a week. Of course if I have customer calls, I have to go, but if I'm doing research or e-mail, then I can work from here.
I used to drive 40K miles/year give or take, and with these changes and picking up an on-site assignment two weeks/month, I'm cutting out 12-15K miles/year.
So it the same effect. My boss is really cool about the whole work from home thing, so he shows support and concern in a way that works for all of us.
