My bro's got an F-150, and he was asking me about paintin' his rear bumber, which is chrome, to match the body color (white). I honestly don't know what to tell him. Anyone know what all would be involved, ie. sand off chrome, dip it, or what. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Scott

The same process as our chrome rings, though much larger in scale... sanding could work, though for failsafe results I would dip it (will require a large container, to say the least..)

I scraped the chrome off with a knife... it worked fantastic until I busted out the dremel and tried to speed up the process. Dremel sank right on into the some what soft plastic.

What about a wire brush wheel? You know, those really stiff wires (like coathanger style) sticking out from the center, and when you turn on the drill it eats away the paint, etc.. They used to advertise them on the "only on TV" sales... for removing paint from walls, etc..

Yes, but isn't the front chrome ring plastic/ a chromish plating? I don't think meriatic (sp) acid will take off the nickel plating on the steel bumper. You will need to get the bumper stripped of the chrome. You can have it bead blasted, dipped (only chromers have the resources to do this, not really a do it yourself project). Prime, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, cure.. then clear it.

Sand w/ 320 until COMPLETELY dull (best to use a DA)...prime, wetsand w/ 400 & soapy water by hand being careful not to go through the primer exposing the metal & then paint.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll pass it on to my brother. We kinda thought it would be involved like this, but were hoping there might be a shortcut. Oh well, thanks again.
