Also how does the recipt this guy has, have the serial number? I've never heard of that.
If it IS his ,aptop he should have the ORIGINAL factory documentation. I would DEMAND to see that, not some reciept that could have been drafted up in Word in 2 minutes. 
I know this is going to sound dumb, but contacting ebay about it never occured to me.
The receipt is the purchace invoice that origionally shipped with the laptop, and the service tag id number is listed on the invoice.
time to contact ebay...

Assuming the invoice is genuine, who's to say that the laptop wasn't sold by the person claiming it was stolen and now wanting to claim it back? Call the cops and let them sort it out - you don't want to be in knowing possession of stolen property. Also have Paypal reverse the payment like NOW before the account is cleared out...

Just a little update. The guy claiming that the laptop was stolen from his office was being genuine in this claim. I took it to the state police, they checked, it was indeed stolen, so it's now on it's way to the prosecuting(sp?) authority as evidence...  but at least I had a laptop for an hour. Things are in the works with Paypal to get my money back, and if something goes wrong there, the laptop owner continues to assure me that I will be reimbursed for being an upstanding citizen. When everything is said and done, I'm not sure if I'm going to try finding another laptop or not, but if I do it will probably be new.

Wow!  First time I've seen that happen. Glad you did the right thing and I'm sure it'll work out with the reimbursement. Any reward for you?

I would have made a ghost image of that thing before turning it over. I'm sure it has some interesting bits on it to be causing all that stink.

Yeah, no kidding!
Back in high school in the computer maintainance class, we had the job of reformatting/installing Win98/McAfee/Office2k on a ton of computers that some gov't place donated.
One of the computers I was working on still had NT 4.0 on it... the l33t hax0r (yeah right  ) in me guessed the password. I didn't get to check anything out b/c the instructor made me reformat it before we got in trouble. Could have been some good stuff... or something dumb like how a certain type of grass grows.
