Have him fax you the receipt, the police report, and a note on company letterhead. Make sure the fax is from his workplace. THen I might start believing him. I have heard of these scams done on the street. One guy walked up to one of my Dad's friends and offered him a VCR for sale. He bought the VCR really cheap, and five minutes later another guy came up to him saying the VCR was stolen from him. They were trying to get the VCR and keep his money. He told the guy to hold on a minute while he went inside to get the VCR. He and his friends went inside and came out wth machete's. They beat the $hit out of that guy with the flat side of a machete, and he ran off. They later saw him again with the same guy who was selling the VCR.

The guy that emailed me did so from a Religious organization that has world-wide ties and affiliations with such people as Rev. Billy Gram, so I'm certain he's not trying to scam me.
Yeah, cuz a religious organization would never scam you...
Don't do anything without contacting the police. It sounds like a scam. What "system codes" will you be checking? The only ones that make any difference are the model and serial numbers.
How did you pay? If you used PayPal and it is indeed for a stolen item, contact them and they can force reverse the monetary transaction. I would wait until I received the computer and then contact your local police and explain the matter to them.

Ask him if he would be willing to file a police report and if not, why?
I'd also thoroughly explore PRECISELY how he/she plans on getting your money back to you.
Finally, how in the HELL did they know how to track you down via e-mail so bloody fast?
Good advice here.

You should emaileBay and ask them about it. They have a department dedicated to scams and spoof emails. If this is a newish thing going on, they may be able to tell you that it's a new scam, or they may direct you on what to do. I would consult them and the police. Also how does the recipt this guy has, have the serial number? I've never heard of that. If it IS his ,aptop he should have the ORIGINAL factory documentation. I would DEMAND to see that, not some reciept that could have been drafted up in Word in 2 minutes.
