Actually a non-interference motor can become interference if the clearance is already a very minimal amount. In my girlfriend's Mazda 626 for instance, the 4-cylinder has such a small clearance that if the belt snaps and there is lots of build-up inside the cylinders, valve damage can happen. This is coming from a Mazda tech so I assume it is correct.
The lesson of course is to keep your motor clean.
