I just about did the same thing when I located my clunking. It was the "collars" on the sway bar itself, the metal bushings that are clamped onto the sway bar. I didn't realize that they can move side-to-side over time as the bar wears. To see if this is your problem, all you need to do is bolt up the sway bar BEFORE attaching it to the end links and check for side-to-side motion of the bar. If it moves AT ALL (I had 1/2" of movement) it WILL clunk.

To remedy the problem, simply hammer the collars toward the middle of the vehicle (gently and evenly, of course - both sides) until the bar no longer moves side-to-side.
