Well I can't say for sure not doing the preload would cause that noise, but you will have premature bushing failure.

I found my CD changer was hitting the rear deck and the speaker boxes where banging around after going with stiffer setup. Roads suck around here. Also I found the jack loose and a air ratchet in the trunk... Not saying this is the case but other things to check around for. Unless you know for sure it's outside and under the car.

Car is in the alignment shop right now.

Another posible source of clunking noise right after upgrading the suspension to a more firm one.. Is exhaust swinging more and hitting the body of the car somewhere. Just something else to check for. grab your muffler and swing it side to side to see if it has too much movement and is hitting.

Checked the exhaust, its not that.

I think I'm going to unbolt the endlinks from the sway bar and drive around like that and see if it still makes the noise...

Well...the sound is definately coming from the sway bar rubbing against the sub frame. I put the car up on the lift, preloaded the control arms (wasn't done before) and put new BAT bushings on the sway bar. I also tried to square up the U-brackets a little (the ones that hold the sway bar). While the noise is gone is, I'm pretty sure it is going to come back. 1) last time i had the bar off the noise dissapeared and came back in 3 miles worth of driving 2)the bar is still pretty much touching the rear subframe

The only thing I can think to do now is to take it back to the shop on monday and have them do something to get the sway bar further away from the sub frame...maybe something with the U-brackets...I don't know

I just about did the same thing when I located my clunking. It was the "collars" on the sway bar itself, the metal bushings that are clamped onto the sway bar. I didn't realize that they can move side-to-side over time as the bar wears. To see if this is your problem, all you need to do is bolt up the sway bar BEFORE attaching it to the end links and check for side-to-side motion of the bar. If it moves AT ALL (I had 1/2" of movement) it WILL clunk.

To remedy the problem, simply hammer the collars toward the middle of the vehicle (gently and evenly, of course - both sides) until the bar no longer moves side-to-side.

Hope that helps. It solved my clunking.
