This was the best line: Quote:

About the only thing I might disagree with him with is the value of learning more about Bin Laden's motives than simply "he wants to start war with us." If we understand why he wants war, we can better fight him and his followers.
The author isn't blinded by red vs. blue or propaganda from either side, which is rare these days - both in blogs and in this forum. Props.

It reminds me of the time I went to the annual airshow at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the most civilized gathering of humanity I have ever witnessed. There were thousands of people camping in several square miles of fields, as far as you could see. What you didn't see was one spec of trash littering the ground, anywhere! The shower facilities scattered throughout the fields seemed pretty inadequate for the amount camping there, but the wait was short and the facilities clean because everyone took care of business and got out of the way to be courteous to the other waiting. It was the only time I have been around that many other like-minded individuals and the experience was very positive.

But thus do I counsel you, my friends: distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful!

Well, an event with people who are all like-minded is pretty much the lowest-risk event one can attend. Throwing a bunch of people from radically different walks of life into a closed environment against their will is the real experiment.

wow! excellent read! "A person of some modest education might have remembered that the worship and adulation fostered after 9/11 was for the NYPD and the FDNY. No one was buying FEMA hats after 9/11"
