So it's a private road but accessible for $7? I've got to break out my map and see where all this stuff is. I would definitely like to take a nice drive while I'm out there. But from the looks of things, I may only have 3 full days, not including the two travel days.
I really have to make this decision this week. The plan is to arrive in SF on a Wednesday evening and depart Sunday early afternoon. Is San Francisco worth going to for only three full days (Thur, Fri and Sat)?

It is definitely worth going to for even one day, but I would suggest limiting the number of things that you try to do. For instance, going down to Monterrey will take a full day, so you may want to stick to things in the city like Peir 39, Golden Gate, chinatown, fisherman's wharf, etc...

If you do Alcatraz, ensure you buy your tickets early online. They often sell out on the weekends.
If you do Monterey, spend the night. Drive from SF down Hwy 1, not Hwy 101

You will love that one day just as you would a full week. I grew up there and miss it like crazy. Every time I return, there is always something new to see or do. It really is spectacular. Greg

I really don't remember the price of admission for certain, but I remember it being $7.00. That is sort of what my wife remembers as well, but not for sure.
I tried a Google search under "Monterey 17 mile drive" and found many great photos and a lot of information, but nothing about the price.
Here is an example:

I'm not joking about the Monterey Bay Aquarium either. It is world class. Admission was about $17.00. The optional headphone thing that describes all of the exhibits was an additional $3.00 and well worth it. You will need one for each person.

I lived in SF for about a year in North Beach. There's a lot of awesome spots there. Golden Gate Park is an awesome place to walk. There's usually a drum circle at the bottom of hippy hill. The park is huge and very scenic. North beach is a great place to eat. lots of Italian restaurants. Fisherman's warf is the boardwalk to SF. Lots of little gift shops and the sort. Market street is where you'll find all of the stores that your woman would like. China town is cool, and I've never been to alcatraz but I heard it's pretty weak. Coit tower has sweet views. PM me if you want specifics. Have fun!

Thanks to everyone for all the info so far.
My next question is where to stay. I don't want to pay too much because we'll be up early and out late, so there's not need for a fancy place. What I'm asking is what area should I avoid? I don't want to stay in a slummy area of town.

I stay at the Sir Francis Drake hotel in Union Square, but I used to get discount rates through my job. Excellent hotel and location.

I have a small map available and it shows different areas, such as Van Ness, Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Union Square, etc. Are any of those areas of concern? I'm assuming that I can get around fairly easily with public transportation. But, if I do have a rental, how's the parking situation by the major attractions?

Use www.hotwire.comThey are based out of SF by the way. I would stay in Embarcadero which is the finance district or near Union Square which is the Shopping district. Both are centrally located to everything. Don't expect large rooms as space is a premium, if you get a rental car expect the hotel to charge you $25+/day for parking. I've stayed in the Hilton Union Square and the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero. Nothing comes cheap in SF but hotwire will be your best cheap to keep things under $100/night.
