I have a '99 V-6 SE Sport that I bought new in December of '98. It has 71,000 miles on it. Is it 100% likely that I have the more durable black palstic water pump and not the crappy white one? It's probably not a big deal to just pull it and take a look but I hate to do work that maybe is totally unnecessary.

I got that backwards didn't I? OK, black bad, white good. No racial overtones intended. Should I check it?

it's not dificult to do, just get another gasket(you'll destroy the one on the pump) and about an hour of time(total start to finish)

i guess it's worth thepiece of mind.

It might not hurt to check it for piece of mind, but the black impeller was out of production long before your 99 was built. My ealry 98 had a white one when I replaced it.

The metal ones fail too, around the shaft itself. (leakage) I've seen.. maybe.. 10 failed white ones in 4 years.

I've heard of at least that amount in metal (all honesty, maybe more.. maybe not.. unsure)

Its a matter of preference, I imagine, but either one is better (BY A MILLION TIMES) than the black ones.

No. No one seemed to know the changover date back then so I changed it for drill. It is a good thing too, as the stainless ring in the housing was loose. A few others have had the same problem, but it doesn't seem to be all that common.

i changed mine at 78k when i bought the car just to be safe. turned out i had the white blades, same as the one i bought from the dealer. nothing wrong with old one but it was easy enough to change and wouldn't have to worry about overheating one day on highway so. so like others, i'd recommend changing.
