The state of Delaware banned smoking in all public establishments two years ago. My dad's been a smoker all his life and it doesn't particularly "bother" me because I grew up with it. Me, I've never smoked, tried, hated it, don't understand it, but that's just me. YMMV. Bars and restaurants lobbied against the DE smoking ban, saying it would close them down, etc., not a single establishment that I used to go to has closed since that point in time, and many were restaurant/bars with avid smokers. Funny thing is I still see some of the same people in there, now they're just smoking outside, but still hanging out at the same bar. Nothing changed. Smokers will adapt.

Second hand smoke is not good for you, particularly for children (i.e. malls and such) who are more susceptible to any disease that is smoking related. Unlike almost any other addictive substance/habit, second hand smoke is vented into the atmosphere that other people breathe, whereas drugs, alcohol, etc., isn't.

I work in center city Philly and the city council is dealing with smoking ban legislation this year, it'll be interesting to see if Philly can push the ban through.
