Several friends of mine went to London last year and they told me that due to the GBP to USD rate, everything there costs about twice as much as it would here, not just gas prices.

I'll ask it again ...
It's tax... so whatever their taxes pay for...

We have taxes on our fuel too , but I'm thinking about something pretty "important" . Isn't their national healthcare funded (or partly-funded) by fuel taxes ???

There is no way we have enough supply to last us the next hundred years at double the consumption rate of oil, no way. There just isn't enough oil down there to do so.
Those are long term concerns. They should have no impact on short term oil prices.
For the term of the contracts, there is enough oil being produced to take care of demand. Therefore, there is adequate supply.

No, not really. The difference is that in Europe generally (don't know exactly about the UK) fuel taxes cover ALL the road construction/maintenance costs for public roads plus much of public transport subsidies plus they are a source of gov't income.
In the US the gas tax pays only for a portion of the road system maintenance, the rest comes straight from federal/state/local budget.
Don't quote me on the numbers, but IIRC in the US the tax content in consumer fuel prices used to be around 20-30% and in EU it was in the range of 60-80% (or even more).
I don't know how is it recently - I remember reading that in most EU countries the gov't actually lowered the fuel tax (percentage wise) in the past months to cushion the economy from the shock, and the gas prices didn't increase as sharply over there as they did in the US. The devaluation of the $ compared to the euro also made oil relatively cheaper (read caused less sharp rise) across the pond.

Yet there is adequate supply to meet demand, so there is no reason for the price to go up. It is not needed to encourage additional production.
But right now, there isn't! I know that here in the state of Mississippi, we did not have a single gas truck make a single run from one of the many refineries here in the SE to a substation until around 1pm. Up until then, none of them could bring any products to the substations and hince the service stations. And yes, because of the mad dash everyone made and all the stupid rumors, some service stations ran out of gas.
I am not very familiar with the logistics of all these refineries, but I'm sure that if most of the countries refineries are located somewhere in the SE and it had a small impact on us, I can understand how it would have an impact on everyone else too.

I believe him because I think this will be the straw that breaks the camals back. Or country for that matter. I heard last night, on the Oreilly Factor, that it cost OPEC $4 dollars a barrel for crude. And since oil futures closed just above $69 a barrel, someone is gouging prices!!
Yet we see this article pop up today...
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_world_business/view/165964/1/.html - "OPEC said Wednesday it would do its utmost to ensure the stability of the global oil market in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and would discuss the means at its summit in Vienna on September 19-20."
Then, we see reports like this...
http://futures.fxstreet.com/Futures/news/afx/singleNew.asp?menu=latestnews&pv_noticia=1125557393-e04f0f08-10815 - "Oil prices fell further in Asian trading hours following the US government's decision to open its emergency oil reserves to compensate for the disruption to US Gulf Coast refinery operations caused by Hurricane Katrina"
http://futures.fxstreet.com/Futures/news/afx/singleNew.asp?menu=latestnews&pv_noticia=MTFH29053_2005-09-01_07-52-47_SP120493 - "Oil prices clawed back above $69 on Thursday as worries over the loss of Gulf of Mexico refining output after Hurricane Katrina outweighed the comfort to refiners of a U.S. government crude loan."
These two articles were released roughly an hour apart!!

I think the collective IQ of this state is around 60. There are reports saying "there are worries about a gas scare," so what do people do. They go buy all the gas and create a gas scare. Every gas station in this damn state had lines wrapped around it last night out onto the street untill they ran out of gas, then everyone ran around the corner to another station. This was happening everwhere, and around here I would guess there are at least 3 gas stations every half mile on any somewhat busy road.
Some gas station owners got fed up with the stupidity and raised their remaining gas to a rediculous price to get the idiots to shut up and go home. I hope I am able to get gas after work today, becuase my tank is on E, but with all the morons running around buying up all the gas I am not entirely sure that will happen
I guess the report that the state of GA is tied for last in average SAT score was not enough to make us all look like dumbasses yesterday

I hope thats a photoshop because that is major gouging Not to go off on a rant here, but think about who you vote for next time and heres why. The "hippies" and "enviromental wackos", all Dems, complain about the need to get away from foreign energy, but when we try to tap our own oil up near Alaska they're worried about some ecosystem up there that will damage the enviroment if we drill. Speaking of the enviromnet, our gas here in SE MI is "formulated" to burn cleaner during the summer monthes, thus making the gas cost more. This theory of "the sky is falling" by them has screwed us long enough, shut the hell up, think before you speak or better yet, clean out your offices and get the hell out

And the EPA has temporarily dropped the polution controll restrictions on gasoline in all 50 states until we can get back to normal.
