Agreed. I know one station that went out of business because so many people boycotted it after raising prices to $5.00 a gallon on 9/11.

Has anyone ever heard of a gas station dramtically LOWERING the prices on their pumps becuase of good news??? Me either.

And if you check, oil company profits are at an all time high.

IIRC gas prices are set by the market primarily based upon futures, not actual purchase price of the product. In general the way most gas stations set prices is actually limited by the supplier, by contract. The supplier sets both the purchase price of the fuel sold from the supplier as well as a price range that the seller can offer his product for. I've talked to two station owners, friends of the family, and both told me this was how it worked. Granted I'd imagine not all suppliers work this way, but most you've heard of do.

EDIT: When I fueled up my SE-R yesterday, 16 gallons cost me about 46 and change. I know I'll break 50 next time around...ugh. My wife drives a Chevy Venture, 26 gallon tank, usually takes 20 gallons at fill up, at 3.00 that's about 60, 4.00 it'd be 80.00. Man, that would suck. We've actually talked about how increasing energy prices are starting to affect our lifestyle choices at this point, and how we've got to be more strategic about conservation via combining errands together and whatnot to not burn up as much fuel. Me, I drive 15 miles daily to/from a train station and then it's an hour's train ride into Philly for me. If prices keep going up, we may need to consider more fuel efficient means of transportation for the family. This month will be the first month that I spend more on gas than on the car payment for one vehicle. Wife normally runs through 200 of gas monthly the last few months, me I run through about 3 tanks or 120, with prices on the rise our monthly number could easily top 400 between both cars. Ugh.

I'm thinking about replacing the Contour with one of these.

Yeah, I know it only has one cylinder and 9.7 hp, but the
top speed is 100 km/h.

Here in Canada gas has jumped to 1.35 a litre which is about 5.20 a gallon. It will cost me now roughly 65.00 to fill up my tour. That is alot to take considering my last fill up was last Thursday at 1.04 a litre which would be about 4.00 a gallon.

Gas in MY area went up 40-45 cents in the last day . This SUCKS !! I'm glad as hell I filled up the SVT last weekend (not my daily driver) . Too bad it won't last me very long once I fire that sucker up & aim it south a week from now . Only about 5 1/2 hours . I'll probably blow through about $200 in fuel in 7 days , maybe (probably) more . I'm getting friggin' depressed . I'm glad my Jettas get 30+ mpg back & forth to work , the SVT sure wouldn't . I still don't like going to the pumps & getting anally gang-raped by the fuel companies . Maybe the prices will eventually come down a bit , but they sure as hell won't put them down even close to where they were . They know soccer moms in their SUVs will pay whatever the pumps say , just as long as they can still gas-ass around with no rhyme or reason whatsoever . Combine trips ??? fuel efficient vehicle ??? BAH !! We'll soon have to factor-in Vaseline costs into our fuel costs when buying/running a vehicle . It's just friggin' rediculous !!

How much will gas prices rise tomorrow ?!?!?!

Vaseline is a petroleum-based product as well, so plan on paying much higher rates than you are used to on it...

Sometimes, you just can't win.

Steve Forbes believes the price is horribly over-inflated, and foresees the bubble to burst... to half price in the next 12 months.

I hope I'm wrong, but Forbes is off his rocker if he think crude will drop that low.

There isn't adequate supply either. China is a nation of 1.3bn people that are starting to come out of the dark ages. The middle class is growing and even if a quarter of that 1.3bn decide to drive, that's double the US's thirst for oil.

There is no way we have enough supply to last us the next hundred years at double the consumption rate of oil, no way. There just isn't enough oil down there to do so.

fwiw, sometime ago i read an article in the la times about the fuel companies(bp, exxon/moble, chevron, etc) all showing record profits during our supposed gas crisis here. no suprise, just proof that they are gang banging us where the sun doesn't shine.
