BACK ON TOPIC!!!!

So can anyone tell me why gas prices have jumped so high? The hurricane os over, as far as I knew it didn't destroy any gas refineries or oil rigs. Is it the whole panic stricken American investor that is driving the price of oil futures up, which is bringing the price of gas up??? Or is it really OPEC. For once I am NOT looking for politics thrown into the arguement, I think gas prices are outragous enough without throwing politics in the mess...

Oh and I am glad I got my bike with 40+mpg...

EDIT: I guess everyone doesnt know why they are so high... I want to know. I have heard all the news reports about it, but I don't believe what I hear all the time...

some pipe lines are shut down across the south becuase there is no power, but thats all I have heard
that and there has been basically no production out of the gulf for the last 3-4 days, and evacuating major cities requires lots of gas for cars getting out of there as well

I would also like to add that New Orleans was the central hub that was used by almost all the oil companys to get their crude oil to the refinerys. And most all those refinerys are in the southeast. Everyone in MS, AL, and LA are down, expect the largest refinery in the nation which is located in Baton Rouge. That one refinery cannot produce enough crude to cover all the refinerys that are down.

As for the oil rigs, if any of them are pumping oil it would suprise the hell out of me, but if they are it is nothing even close to what the normally pump out.

I tell ya what.. Instead of me jabbing on, here are some links that might answer those questions...

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N31357472.htm - "Exxon Mobil Corp. said Wednesday that restoring products pipeline and marine links, including Mississippi River traffic, was the key to boosting crude runs at its capacity-curbed Baton Rouge, Louisiana, refinery."

http://www.katc.com/Global/story.asp?S=3789948 - "Since Katrina first threatened Gulf platforms, six-point-one (m) million barrels of oil and 34-point-two (b) billion cubic feet of gas have been delayed from reaching market." also, this short story states that some platforms are pumping again.

http://washingtontimes.com/business/20050831-120210-4140r.htm - "Hurricane Katrina shut down almost all of the energy production in the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the nation's short-term energy future."

http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/provider/providerarticle.asp?feed=OBR&Date=20050831&ID=5076551 - "The U.S. Coast Guard reported at least 20 oil rigs or platforms missing in the Gulf of Mexico, while officials estimated 95 percent of regional oil and natural gas production and nine refineries along the coast remained shut down."

This should be enough reading for everyone that should last a good while.

Oops! One more...

http://ogj.pennnet.com/articles/article_display.cfm?Section=ONART&C=GenIn&ARTICLE_ID=235844&p=7 - "It will take weeksperhaps monthsto bring flooded, powerless Gulf Coast refineries back to operation and to restore oil and natural gas production to its former levels, said observers. Meanwhile, most expect energy prices to climb."

This is coming very close to the last straw for keeping my Contour. Apart from spending ungodly amounts of money in the past week and a half (and it's still overheating, and still at the dealer), I cannot afford to fill on the V6 anymore.

My dad's been using the Miata as a daily driver lately .. and for good reason (not just that I need his Subaru) ...

it's unlikely the gov't will do anything to stimulate new refinery construction unless gas prices become such a problem that they seriously start effecting our economy.

I think it's already there. The latest 50% increase is posing a real hardship for many people.

What I don't understand is what refining shortages have anything to do with the unrefined crude oil. It would be like increasing the price of wheat because there aren't enough ovens to bake bread.

That said, the e.p.a. needs to be circumvented because more refineries are needed for national security.

Stopped to get some gas on the way back from Home Depot, I wouldn't have stopped but the low fuel light had been on for awhile.

where i live gas went up $.70 in the last 24 hrs and $.85 in last 48 hrs. just went from paying $41/week to $55. that's about $55 more a month more to operate my car. ...if gas prices don't go any higher.

it's all about getting the best mileage at this point. no more aggressive or fast driving for a while, at least until prices drop.

Tapping the SOR is the stupidest thing Bush has done yet.

The SOR should ONLY be used as a hedge against the Middle East or OPEC shutting off the taps, this is nothing if they ever actually do that.

You know what, I always defend the US and Americans in Canada, but seriously GROW UP. Even with the gas price increase you still have the cheapest gas globally. We pay 4.50 in canada !

Even with more refining capacity, the price wont' go down that much because the oil companies have to recoup the cost of the refineries.

Simple fact, supply is steady, demand is increasing drastically.

High gas prices are here to stay, DEAL with it. The days of cheap oil is no more so move on.

But no, the US just has to keep buying 7mpg Excursions and Suburbans for Mommy to drop off Jimmy three blocks from home. The country is seriously digging it's own grave deeper and deeper with SUV sales.

I also blame the US government, I commend Bush on having the balls to go into Iraq, now he has to have balls to force conservation and alternate fuels like methane down the public's throats. I had a hope he was the right person for the job, I guess not.
