I didn't know that either, and I'm not sure if it's accurate. I was under the impression that it's a 100% Yamaha design. Furthermore, those engines had MAJOR problems because the pressed-on cam sprockets come loose and eventually freewheel, which causes the pistons to smash the valves. I've never heard of that issue with any Duratec.
In fact, it's probably closer to the other way around--I've heard that Ford learned quite a bit from the original Yamaha V6, and it influenced the modular V8 and Duratec engines. That's just hearsay, but I believe it considering the design similarities (DOHC, 2-stage intake, similar hp/liter, etc).
