I didn't know that either, and I'm not sure if it's accurate. I was under the impression that it's a 100% Yamaha design. Furthermore, those engines had MAJOR problems because the pressed-on cam sprockets come loose and eventually freewheel, which causes the pistons to smash the valves. I've never heard of that issue with any Duratec.

In fact, it's probably closer to the other way around--I've heard that Ford learned quite a bit from the original Yamaha V6, and it influenced the modular V8 and Duratec engines. That's just hearsay, but I believe it considering the design similarities (DOHC, 2-stage intake, similar hp/liter, etc).

wouldn't that slightly go against the fact that the 2.5 is a porsche design?

Ahh yes, I forgot about that! Pretty much invalidates that rumor, at least for the Duratec.

Another Duratec-related tidbit: A few years ago I read a book called "Car". It was a great read that discussed what happened behind the scenes at Ford when they were designing the '96 (oval) Taurus. Evidently when the Ford execs heard that Cadillac had named their engine the Northstar, they loved the name and wished they had thought of it. One of them lamented that "Duratec", by comparison, sounds like the name of a pair of pliers.

The entry also states "both Aston Martin and Cosworth are owned by Ford" which isn't true. Why would Cosworth produce engines for Chevrolet Indy cars?

It's accurate. On the 3.4L SHO V8 only the cylinder heads were of Yamaha design. Everything thing else was Ford.

Ford worked with Yamaha! Yes, Ford had the original Duratec designed by Porsche. They then altered it to what we have today. They took the final draft and designed a V8 with the same block dimensions and put Yamaha designed heads on it.

& anyone had clicked on the Yamaha link you would have read the same thing I typed and linked.

Because at the time when the V12 was being built Cosworth was partnered with Ford. They have since split off.
