Antonio, you know I like you and all, but c'mon. Yes, the term 'nigger' was most likely started in a derogatory way by us evil white folk, however, in today's world, it is used much more by the black community in a negative and I guess postive? way. I am glad you like me. At least someone does.  Anyway, back to the point. Ryan, just imagine you hearing a word over and over again to describe people that look just like you. Over time, you and the generations after you will use that word to describe each other. Granted, many have try to change the spelling and say that the word Nigga is different then the word nigger, but that is not the point.
The point is in which context the word is used. Here is a example. Hey, look at those niggers over there looting! Hell, get the gun! They, might try and go for the boat. Sam, you know niggers can't swim.
Chris is my nigga for life. No, matter what went down, he always had my back.
The interesting thing is that the tone is completely different in which the way the word was used.

Renee, the word is a racial term. So, the context in which it was used is correct. In regards to the word nigger. There is no concrete information on where the word originated from. Some people believe, that the word orginated from the country Niger, or the word means ignorant like you stated. The fact of the matter is now, it is used as a racist term to describe blacks and other minorities, particually the ones from the middle east.
So, let me get this straight. Since I am an Armenian-American and from the middle-east, (born and raised in NYC, same for my parents) does that make me a nigger? If so, woo-woo! I can now sue 'whitey' for billions of dollars for something that happened 300+ years ago, by people that are long dead! woo-woo!
Or, if that doesn't apply, do I have to pay for possible court cases if 'whitey' loses? I mean, my family didn't come over to the US until the 1920s, when Armenians were getting slaughtered by the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) from 1915-1917. So, that make me exempt, right? Oh, I forgot. And, that is your opinion. I seems that I am talking to brick walls here. If you want further discussion on how the term is indeed used to describe people from the middle east then you can PM as well. Oh, and by the way. The ramifications of slavery is still strong in this country.

I always thought it initially was dialectization of the word "negro". To swerve this WAAAAAY off topic, my mom once told me about her schoolteacher days in the 1960s in small-town Tennessee (so you can imagine what's coming), when some kid in her class called this little black girl a nigger. Mom said the girl turned around and said back "I ain't no nigger, I'm a NEEEE-GRA!" Which, if you look at it, is a feminized version of "negro", so...yeah.
But anyway.
