I have a regular paper filter and the clamps are tight. The Mechanics installed everything so I am assuming that everything with the MAF was installed correctly. I was wondering if there could be something else electical that could be causing it to go out.

As a last ditch effort, I would check the air filter and housing again. Many mechanics find it hard to install the housing correctly. After that I would seriously consider an OEM MAF sensor (if that wasn't what was installed by the mechanic). I think those are very expensive.

BTW the assumption was that you got a code which said the MAF sensor was dead. Did you get a CEL code for it and what was the code?

That is good information. I didn't realize that the car would run with the MAF disconnected but I recently read another post where someone removed the entire air box and rubber plenum and ran the car like that (for troubleshooting purposes). I certainly didn't realize the car would run like that. What does the PCM do, go into open-loop mode?

I do not know the exact code that the mechanics got, but each time they replace the MAF the problem goes away for a little while, I am just trying to figure out what could be causing it to go out so often.

The MAF sensor is "quite delicate". Any number of things can mess it up. Which is why I suggested to check that the air filter housing is installed correctly. And also to make sure they are installing the correct MAF sensor. I think the Cougars use a different one from the Contours.
