I have done both. I really did not like the all season tires. The traction was not as good as summer performance tires and the winter traction was not as good as winter tires. They also only lasted 28,000 miles so......
Now I run winter and summer tires. I only put about 3000 miles a year on the snow tires and have had them for 4 years now. You can't beat the traction and if you get another set of rims changing out for the season takes about 15 minutes.
