It goes on a rachet, and the screw driver looking part goes in and splits the knuckle open enough free the strut from the knuckle. The problem I've found with the tool, is that the tab on the struts themselves generally run the lenght and the slist on the knuckle, making it really hard to fit the spreader in to work properly/effectively. For the LOWER BALL JOINT I hammer in a chisel into the split to open it up. Let it soak, and bang with a rubber mallet + 2x4. Mine just slid off, and it had 83k miles on it. Much easier than I expected.
