Hey Guys, I'm new here but I've been browsing the forums for a little while. I bought a 98 SVT Contour in near perfect condition about a month and a half ago, and I just can't wait to go to work on it. I'm planning on taking it to the track (closed circuit road course, NOT the stip), and I've been contemplating shock set-ups because the stock ones aren't in great shape any more.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which set-ups are the best, and which are the best for the money.
Right now I'm leaning toward Konis, but I'm open to any ideas. Thanks for the help.

Oh, and I almost forgot to add, I'm planning on lowering it in the spring... possibly an Eibach pro-kit.

If you wanna track it go Koni and if your goona lower it, do it at the same time. The H&R's or B&G Sport Springs are my preference unless you want all out track, then either get the Ground Control Kit or the new knock-offs of those from eBay. But beware. there are a few coilover kit on eBay for the Contour that are complete crap and look NOTHING like the GC kit. Search this forum for the EBay GC knock-offs.

I'm about to swap out shocks on my 99' SVTC. Going with either BAT or Bilsteins struts, but I'm sticking with the stock springs.

If you are going to lower it, why not do both at the same time? The struts on this car are kind of a pain in the ass to pull. So why not do it once instead of twice.

Why the hell do they clamp the strut to the hub.

I'd stop driving it if you have clamps on your suspension.

So would I.

I was refering to how the strut was held is in place, this:

vs. being bolted on:

Just had to rant. I hated having to deal with it on my old GTI, and I'm not gonna like it on the Contour. Bolting them on is just much easier.

When you say "clamped", are you refering to the knuckle (#9) in your diagram?

Yea. I'm stuck in work mode right now, so 'clamped' is the best description I can come up with.

Just a word of advice...before you take the struts out, make sure you spray a ton of penetrating lube on the struts right at the knuckle and let it sit for about an hour, or you will be pounding on them all day with a hammer

heh... mostly monetary reasons. I need to make it through the school year at U of M before I can spend too much more cash. Plus I kind of want to see how it rides at stock height with new shocks before I go all out.

As far as the Konis go, does anyone know where I can find good prices? I'm in Southeast Michigan if anyone knows of any place in the southern LP. Thanks for the help.

Actually I was going to use something like this:

http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp?action=PROD&PROD=VW3424&CTMP=1&LowCt=0

I grounded down a 1/2" to 3/8" socket to look a little like that. Did wonders on the ex-GTI. Also helped with the Contour when I pulled the strut to take out the CV shaft.

If you are going with Koni's, look at AJUSA. The struts are $630 with free shipping, and if you google 'AJUSA coupon' you can find a code for $30 off.
