Ok a topic thats been beaten to death.

In Bat's catalog they list and sell the
22FS, and refer to it as " the best choice
for use in the Duratec V6 engines"

so whats the difference?

I'm slightly confused on this one.

Thanks for any immediate help

Part # listed on box is AGSF 22FSM

Who cares? Autolite APP764 are the ones you should be running. Double plats and cheap.

The FSM is a fine wire plug. Ford changed the recommended Duratec plug # to the FSM. Don't know why since double plats should only be used.

The 22 is one heat range colder. You are not likely to need a colder plug unless you have extensive modifications. Start with the 32 (or the Autolite APP764) and see how the engine likes it and move to a colder plug if there are indications that the plug tip is too hot.

I doubt that you will need the colder plug.

Fine wires make the old requirement for PPs irrelevent.

Either will work fine and will give similar service life.

You are kidding, right? Double-plats are needed due to the way the coilpack works. It has nothing to do with the wires.

No, I am not kidding. Your information is out of date.

Do you have any idea HOW the Contour's coil pack works???? Spark goes one direction on one bank, then the other direction on the other bank.

This means that platinum is needed on the electrode on one bank, and then platinum is needed on the ground on the other bank.

From the factory, one bank has the -E plugs, and the other ones are -G plugs.

What the hell would wires have to do with the way the coilpack fires????

Greg, Todd, Tom, feel free to jump in here anytime.

Fine wire plugs are the new standard in Ford waste fire systems. (for that matter many companies are using them now)

Why is that?
Because the amount of current required to start the spark jumping is exponentially less with a fine wire plug there is not the dramatic transfer of material every time.

Also the platinum used in the fine wire plugs is significantly better quality.

You will get "roughly" the same mileage out of a "properly" designed fine wire plug as a double platinum plug. 40-60k tops.

Fine wire plugs have better throttle response and promote less emissions. (stronger, more efficient spark kernel)

To respond to the original question...

Why are you running a step colder plug?
You are loosing mpg and even a little performance doing this on any car but a high compression hybrid with a wicked timing curve that is also running race fuel. (that or boost)

I found no benefit to running 1 step colder plugs on my 10.3 CR SVT with ignition timing near double the stock curves. I did lose mpg from running them. (i.e. they were too cold for optimum non-WOT fuel burn)

What about something like the Autolite XP plugs?? Anyone try them yet?? I just did plugs like 15k (Autolite APP764) ago so i'm good for a while, but i'd be willing to give them a shot to see if it makes a difference in performance/gas mileage.
