The speed limit is such an archane rule, especially on the highway. You have to realize that the majority of these limits were set by engineers (I use that term loosely) 30, 40, 50? years ago? When cars were a lot slower, handled worse, less safe etc.
Am I saying we should repeal speed limits completely, no way, I think there are a lot of situtions where speed limits are good, like in towns and on city streets. However, on the highway it is another story. A "safe" speed depends on many things, not least of which is vehicle. Unfortunately, we will never see a limit-less highway in our lifetimes in the US because of the lack of judgement and responsibility by many of our drivers.
As for the original post, the guy in the Talon should/could be held liable for causing the accident, but not for her death. At worst that is contributory negligence.
