He could pick up a Taurus with the Duratec in it and use that, the 96+ Taurus' only came in ATX. So that shouldn't be too hard to find in a junkyard. Or would the ATX in a Taurus not fit a Contour?

Look at it this way: How much is your car worth on the open market? By the time all is said and done, you will lose WAY less money by selling your car and finding a V6 atx to buy. And you won't have had your car out of commission forever.
Anything is doable with enough time and money. But the bigger question is whether it is worth the time and money to do it.
Ford has already done the work for you.

What you want to do is a CAR swap - to a V6 ATX (why ATX I cannot imagine, but anyway...), not an ENGINE swap. It'll cost you more to swap from a Zetec to a Dutratec than to just sell your car and by a V6 version of it - seriously!

I used to have a zetec atx mystique and wanted to do a 2.5 conversion and everyone here told me it would be easier and cheaper to go out and buy a V6 car. ....so I traded it in for a V6,5 speed and have never been happier.

I left my Zetec stock, especially with the ATX because it was so crappy I figured dumping money into it to make it even a little faster would be absolutely pointless because it would still be slower than a snail on speed.
The stock 2.5 is awesome,and I can't wait till I go 3L.
3L will be late '06 or over the winter. Or when my engine dies. I have 280k on it right now,so it could go any time.

I posted in the general forums a couple of days before you did, basically the same exact question. My post. And I got basically the same exact answers, except for the suggestion of doing basic bolt on style mods to gain a few HP out of it. That looks liket he route I'll be going, along with a few upgrades of parts that need to be replaced anyhow to make it seem newer and more comfortable. It's still a good car with only 56k on it right now. So I'll be keeping it till it completely dies.
