Want better gas mileage ...go buy a freaking metro... how about you suck it up..have fun driving the way you want... maintenance your car... pay the price at the gas pump ... and thank the lord you passed up the H-2 (PS. H-2's are gay)

LOL ok that was a bit rash. But seriously, if the only way i can get better gas mileage is by not being able to really drive a car that's meant to be driven hard, then bad gas mileage, here i come.

how about putting a 6 speed tranny in it? What is the RPM's on the final gear at 60 for those who put a mondeo tranny in?

Yup. Accelerate gradually, drive the speed limit, drive 55 mph with the cruise control on the highway, don't roll down the windows or use air conditioning, and avoid idling your car. Driving habits will be the biggest thing that affects your mileage.

Keep up with standard maintenance.

Do mods like lowering, narrower tires, chips, intake, headers, exhaust, synthetic lubricants, wheel well covers, and lighten as much as possible.

I agree. And yes H-2's are gay

Also, when you do exhaust, chip, and all the things that help economy, it has more power. I don't know about you guys, but if I have more power, I use it. So whatever fuel economy that is gained by those mods, I lose in driving harder. Oh well, maybe on the freeway with the curise on I'll see some gains in MPG.

At least for the exhaust, I found the opposite to be true for me.

When the stock muffler went out on my 93 Prelude, I replaced it with a Flowmaster system. The thing was so damn loud that I kept my revs down just to stay at a reasonable volume. The two combined netted an almost 2-mpg increase.

I know this is probably obvious to those that know more, but I've heard different opinions from different people...

Would shifting at 2k rpm yield better mileage than shifting at 3k? Would would you consider to be most fuel-efficient shift point and why?

Thanks

4000-5000 rpm shift point.

Anything less will make you press the pedal more because of the lack of acceleration just to stay in traffic. Anything more and you are getting into opening the secondaries and requiring more gas.
Yes, having a weak motor can cost you more mileage some times then having a strong one and just not using all of its potential.
