Too bad the CRD Liberty just came out, more or less, and is still above $20K even for used ones. That version of the Liberty spanks the Escape hands down, but I do love turbo diesels AND Jeeps so take it for what it's worth.

Nothing! It is worth NOTHING I tell ya!!

I like the idea behind the Liberty diesel but wish Jeep would raid the DC parts bin for an engine with larger testicles. Maybe when low-sulphur fuel gets here next year us Americans can get a broader selection.

I plan on buying a CRD Liberty fairly soon, so I am very bias
The 2.8L CRD is like any other diesel, they aren't HP kings at all. The TQ is where it kicks but! Also, with intake and exhaust mods with the tuning to use them, I am sure there is lots of power to be had Stock is way too boring though, but with the right mods they can be sweet!

What's the prospect for a diesel Wrangler?

Oh man, that'd be too sweet for words! I honestly don't know, but I would rather have a CRD Wrangler Unlimited rather than a Liberty any day!

Hey Pete, I haven't posted on here for a while but I still troll.
I bought my wife an 02 Escape XLT. It's got the 201HP and i think like 190TQ 3.0 V6. FWD because the 4WD has worse gas milage. Honestly, just like the contour, it has it's little quirks but I do love that truck. I bought it at 51k for 18k with an added warrenty. It was actually advertised for like 19,000 but I got a good deal in. These things are awesome.
If I had a choice I would get the Mercury Mariner but they aren't available in those years and just an opinion, the tribute looks like crap. I hate the styling.
enough opinions, I don't know what to tell you other than my milage averages between 16 (balls to the wall flooring everywhere) to about 19.5 country hills and highway driving. A/C on too. So if you have any questions, you can hit me up.

I'd recommend the Tribute/Escape as well...
The Liberty's fuel economy is downright rotten: 15 mpg overall. The CRD is only as efficient as a gasoline V6 Escape... and MUCH slower.

It's a second slower, but it has a lot more power. If you tow at all, it spanks the Escape. It all depends on what you are going to do with an SUV I guess.

Put a $5k deposit on the Escape tonight, picking it up on Sat (tentatively).

Good choice. BTW, My escape tows I think like 3,000lbs, or maybe 3,500. Can't remember. The liberty doesn't do much more than that does it?
