possibilities:
Your compressor may, indeed, be out..
Your compressor clutch may be bad, too.
a leak in the system
cycling switch may be bad.
etc
etc
etc

edit: I'm not an AC guy, so I will let someone else chime in throughout the night with tips on troubleshooting, or narrowing down the causes.
