IIRC, didn't HRi not do so hot in reviews? Are you sure you're not talking about ZRi?

well I work for firestone, and have the hri's on my se so I'm speaking from personal experience. They're stiff yet have a soft tread that makes them grip well in the rain and snow. they retail for like 50 bucks a tire. compare them to other 50 dollar tires, and they'll kick they're a$$.. The zri's are nice tires as well, but I wouldnt call them all season.
edit: also where did you see bad reviews on them?? go check tire rack, most people on there praised them, those who didnt are comparing them to 125 dollar a piece bridgestones and michellins, and shouldnt clutter the reviews with bad opinions like that..compare apples to apples.

ZIEX 512 is a badass tire, plain and simple. And for a 15" tire, I can't imagine they'd be anymore than $80/tire. They are extremely soft, handle really well, good in the rain, look aggressive, and aren't hard on the wallet. I've had a couple sets of these tires, and am considering going back if I can't find another set of what I'm running now.

I've heard nothing but good things about them, from very serious drivers. OTOH, I would get snow tires for the 15s in stock size, and Fuzion ZRis in 225/50R16 (would be great on E1s) or 225/45R17 on some of the 17s that are always for sale (often cheap) in the classifieds. It's a bigger investment, but you get great grip and looks year-round. Plus you wear through tires slower, so the long-term cost is only the second set of wheels. And, your car is much safer in the winter. Ziex are nothing close to a real snow tire, so if you live where you have to drive in the white stuff very much I'd do the two sets. But like I said, Ziex are good tires, so if cash flow is a problem (when isn't it!), you won't be dissapointed with them.

I have a subaru forester to drive in the winter, so I dont care really about snow ratings. I just want a decent handling all season. I don't autocross or drag my car so anything super high performance would be stupid for me to buy.

What's the point of an all season then if you don't need it in the winter? Summer tires do better in the dry and rain than all seasons. All seasons just do better in "mud and snow".

AFAIK all seasons are cheaper than summer tires. If I'm wrong please show/tell me.
Edit- Plus 4 Ziex's shipped for $200 sounds like a good deal to me.

Yes, a bit cheaper. But heck if you want cheap, just grab some no name tire from a local tire shop.

I too was looking at those tires a couple weeks ago, and when I went to discount they informed me that there is no mile warranty on the tire. I don't know if that matters to you but it does to me. Also they said that they are crappy tires in the snow, but great in rain and dry roads. I went with the Goodyear Triple tread, and LOVE it. My parents have this tire on their van and it handles great in the snow, and has a really agressive look to it as well.
But if you go with the Falken's you can find them real cheap online, like 50 a tire i think.

So your parents van handles great in the snow and has a really aggressive look?
I'm guessing you shouldn't have listened to the tire guy. The Falken Ziex 512's are probably not $50 a tire and they don't suck. I first started buying them in 2003 and I moved from my BFG GForce tires to them because they cost 2/3 what the BFG did and provided comparable performance. THey were rated about as high in speed and in treadware. WHen I actually used them I felt no loss in handling ability and they are the only performance tire that I have tried that can actually hold traction in my car under moderate loads.
