Whats with the steel pan? I have nice aluminum skid marks on my garage floor from where I pulled a Zetec around tonight. The pan in my car is also aluminum. Was it a 98+ thing?
How hard was it? I don't have a lift or anything to lift the engine up with, but I might be able to borrow the latter. In the hayne's it sounds like more of a pain than I thought it would be, like removing the exhaust, and a bunch of other stuff. Is all that necessary?
And I don't know why it's a steel pan, seems dumb to me, I don't know if I could replace it with an aluminum one or not.

So are there two oil pan gaskets? It looks like there are, and if so is it easier to change the lower one, and can I only change the lower one? It looks like the lower one is the one that's leaking.

I was doing more then just the oil pan when I did mine. I had the subframe out already because I was changing the tie rods and boxing in the front LCAs. It would probably be possible if you were to lift the engine so you could change the gaskets that way. I havent tried it that way though.

Pep Boys sells some UV dye (~$5). You could clean the oil pan, put that in, drive for a little while and see if the blacklight would show you where its coming from.

Cool! It's worth a try, if they seem really tight I won't force it, but I have a torque wrench so I could set it to make sure I don't go to far.

Yeah it's rusted pretty bad, but the leak isn't too bad, so I'm sort of in the deciding what to do mode.
I found the gasket is $10, and a new oil pan is $40. Could be worse.
I check at the local stealership just for kicks and labor alone is going to be "around $300 dollars". They said it'd take at least 4 or 5 hours. They must be slow, cuz that's with lifts and lots of nice tools.
Definately gonna do it myself if I do it. -Peter
