i just graduated from high school and i was wondering if there was a web site out there that had how companies rate and view different college graduates. like how they would rate a mechanical engineer graduate from state vs. a ME from LIT. thanks.

I'm pretty certain your performance at your institution of choice would be the 'ranking' someone may be looking for. In college, your education depends much on how you approach it, but if you want to see what some people think of colleges, you can check out U.S. News and World Report's college rankings.

Your school should have a career planning office that would have that kind of info. Check with the Student Services once you get to your college.

It depends on what type of job you end up wanting as far as how a potential employer "rates" you. For example, I work at Lockheed Martin and we recruit from a list of 89 schools in the US. Those 89 schools are broken up into categories with the two main categories being Key Schools and Target Schools.

Key Schools are at the top of I guess what you could call a "pre-ranking," basically Lockheed tries the hardest to get graduates from those schools since statistically they receive better educations for the technical field. I went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute which is one of Lockheed's Key Schools and I have no doubts that aided in me getting interviews and eventually getting the job. Basically the schools reputation gets you slightly higher on the list, but they still look at how well you perform in your given school.

As someone intimately involved in the information that goes into USN&WW I am morally bound to say that it is a good first step to identifying an institution to attend. However, the decision-making process must include #1 a visit to campus; #2 talking with students; #3 talking with alums from your major; #4 meeting your faculty.

That being said, the rankings for 2006 are out tomorrow and the guidebook hits the stands next week. Happy reading.
