I had the same exact problem setting up a friend's gaming computer in his living room. The wireless keyboard/mouse only had a range of about 5 feet.

I opened up the receiver and found that the antenna consisted of nothing more than a small loop-shaped solder trace around the perimeter of the circuit board. I soldered about 6 feet of wire onto the end of the trace, glued it in place, ran it through a hole I drilled in the case, buttoned it back up, and stretched the antenna wire out behind the entertainment center. Problem solved!
