Homeless hold sleep-over to protest panhandling ban I heard about this on the radio yesterday and I about ran off the road laughing. Homeless people camping out in front of the state capitol, and that is different from everyother day how... I live in downtown atlanta, and I completely agree with this agressive panhandling ban. I can't even get gas anymore without someone standing by my door asking for money. And the notion that this is about race is absolutely rediculous. There is nothing wrong with sitting on the side of the street and holding out a cup asking for money, but you shouldn't be aloud to follow people and harrass them untill they give you something.

I agree with the ban. I like how the article points out that there are programs available for homeless people - seek help from the shelters and programs, and not from every single person you pass on the street. oh and

It's the sorry excuses I hear that piss me off more than anything.

I remember being in Atlanta a few years back and it was awful. I had never seen such a gathering of homeless. The panhandlers were awful. I frequent Detroit, so that saying alot. Though in Detroit it has seemed to decline slightly over the years. I agree with the ban.

Y2KSVT, most of them here don't even bother with stories, although I have seen a few putting on casts in the back alley, or the guy that was 'blind' one day and perfectly fine the next. A couple weeks ago I was getting gas and a guy walks up to me and says,
"hey man, I just got out of prison, can I have some money for cigarrettes."

LOL, we shipped all of our homeless to Birmingham AL before the olympics in 1996, but 10 years later they are back and better than ever

I concur. Usually it's not homeless here, but just drunks/druggies. They always say some crap about their car ran outta gas, kids need medicine,etc.

Dallas Texas has a very aggressive homeless stance...
They can't panhandle anymore...
They can't sleep ANYWHERE in the city anymore...except for shelters...
They can't even LOOK like they are going to sleep...
And the best new rule...
DON'T FEED THE HOMELESS
That's right, Dallas, Texas has outlawed feeding the homeless outside of a shelter...
They are causing a huge waste problem, attracting HUGE freaking rats, destroying Dallas' image (not like it's that great to begin with, but they are trying to improve that).
Anyway, it's great. Dallas is saying we've got the shelters, either use them or leave the city...In other words, Dallas is making a great effort at trying to control the problems with the homeless while also trying to help them...
