both of them don't really seem to bad , I built computers for a little over 5 years but I got sick of them . Either way Sony isn't a bad way to go .

Start here. Add 1905FP monitor for $50. Get another 512MB RAM for $40 or less, DVD burner for $25, 160GB HDD for $30 if you need more capacity, and a $50 DVI video card. Better than the Sony descktop you posted. Or, hurry up and order Dell 700m laptop for $750 and save $250 for a 19" LCD.

i dont know what kind of uses you plan of having your notebook for but...
i like my computer to be able to handle whatever i throw at it..i also play a few games that require it. i just ordered a pretty much completely top-of-the-like notebook from ibuypower.com and it came to $1600 shipped
i know you said 1000, but for what you're asking, you could probably piece together something for that price.. stats on the one i ordered are -Amd athlon 64 3700+ -1024 corsair ddr400 ram -60gig hd at 7200rpm -Mobility 128mb radeon 9700 pro 256-bit 3dvideo -8x dual format dvd-r/rw 16x cd-r/rw -built in wireless, mouse, painted blue. basically i maxxed out all the options on their site (the laptop is named batallion turbo 2) it also comes with a carrying case and half-life 2, i think its value cant be beat, that is, if you play games or stress your computer a lot. check out some models on their site, i like it because its much more personal, theyre all built just for you. also try zeuspc.com

Why do you want a laptop? There are two main types :-
1. Portable (aka desktop replacement). These are designed to be used at a desk, on power when you use them. They are powerful but big and with low battery life (<4 hours).
2. Mobile. THese are designed for use on the road. They are light, less powerful than desktop replacement types, but have good battery life at 5+ hours usually.
For a desktop, I like Acer ... high quality machines with good warranty and low failure rate.

i know you said 1000, but for what you're asking, you could probably piece together something for that price.. stats on the one i ordered are
-Amd athlon 64 3700+
-1024 corsair ddr400 ram
-60gig hd at 7200rpm
-Mobility 128mb radeon 9700 pro 256-bit 3dvideo
-8x dual format dvd-r/rw 16x cd-r/rw
-built in wireless, mouse, painted blue.

Sounds a lot like mine...but mine is older
Gateway 7210GX
-Amd athlon 64 3200+
-512mb corsair ddr400 ram
-60gig hd at 7200rpm
-Mobility 64mb radeon 9600 pro 128-bit 3dvideo
-4x dual format dvd-r/rw 16x cd-r/rw
-built in wireless, mouse. Mines just silver
-15.8" Wide screen WXGA
All for $1024 about 4 months ago! I would recommend gateway...I love my laptop. If you want a desktop PC, build your own. I dont trust PC manufacturers today INCLUDING alienware (5 grand for something I can build for only 1500... )
If you need someone to assemble it, just ship me the parts, I will install, set it up and even put some cool games on there for free. I have made over 50 computers...all of which (to my knowledge - no one emailing me after 2 years) still work perfectly.
