Gents, currently I have what seems to be a Mustang II of computers, a Gateway PIII 550mhz turd. I guess I can't really complain, it's 5 years old and does what I ask of it (although sometimes slowly). Since I've started school I've contemplated getting a new computer. I don't play games, just the basic internet porn, er surfing, and word processing and maybe a powerpoint here and there. I thought I'd like to build my own computer but I don't have the time to research all the products and i'm just down right lazy. So, if you were to recommend one of the 'major' comptuer manufacturers out there who would you go with?

Dell. If you watch places like www.slickdeals.net and www.passwird.com you can get some insane deals on systems. I've seen systems with 17" lcd's and a decent setup that would do more then what you wanted for under 450$. If you have the time to wait for good rebate offers, dell all the way.
Edit: Replying to this post does not make me a computer geek!

For the best quality/price ratio you absolutely cannot beat a Dell PC. Period.

But do not purchase a lower end dell. You get what you pay for.
I'm not suggsting a different brand; Dell is the way to go. My school uses one of the lower end money-savers, and let me tell you.. they suck. I mean, for even regular web browsing, not the heavy load of modelling and animation (or games, or whatever).
I'd say Dell as a starter, and then of course research others to find comparable or better deals (if any).

check www.gotapex.com for Dell deals too, and don't forget about Dell's refurb site!

In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.

Are these deals any different than what is on the Dell website? Or are they just advertising where you can find deals? That looks like a pretty decent computer from what I can tell, but I don't know much about them either.

those deal sites usually list upcoming Dell deals before Dell announces them on their main site. Kind of a heads up to do your shopping early the day of the deal. You take the coupon code to the Dell main site and make your order through Dell.
That's how we got our Inspiron laptop for dirt cheap.

My entire office runs on Dell's, including 5 laptops. I love every system we have, and their support is excellent. When I worked at Symantec I had to outfit our office, so I purchased about $2.5mil in systems from Dell -- which got me an invite to their Austin warehouse/assembly line. They have an amazing setup there, its very slick to see how they put together hundreds to thousands of custom systems a day.
