You get the best fuel economy if you redline it in first and immediately shift to a high gear. I am assuming that when he shifts into fifth his foot is pretty far down on the gas, and even if the engine isn't revving high he is still using a lot of gas, more than if you were to use the gears for what they are there for.
As far as powershifting goes, maybe we can get the opinion of expirienced drag racers. Personally I see no benefit apart from spinning your tires, which personally I find goofy in a FWD car

. If you are powershifting without hitting the rev limiter then you are shifting too low in the rev range. If you powershift with the revvs up high then you run into the rev limiter.
Smartest thing to do is a variation of what Demon was describing, without grinding of course!
