You get the best fuel economy if you redline it in first and immediately shift to a high gear. I don't see anything wrong with doing that, it just seems a little odd (I don't do it).

power shifting if I remeber right
After hitting what rpm you want to shift at you let of the gas for a second at that second the tranny should have little or no preasure on the shifting portion( man I'm good with vocab.) of the tranny alowing you to pull it out of gear. After out of gear use the accelerator (this must be done quick so not to loose to much speed costing) to match the rpm of the speed whitch you are going at that moment and you should be able to slide it in to the next gear. If done wrong though you get this wonderful grinding noise. and some wonderful metal shavings in your tranny fluid when you drain it next time

Speed shifting Is just shifting just fast and foot stays on the accelerator.

word to the wise. Use the clutch thats what its there for.

Gas mileage is drastically affected by throttle position aswell. I am assuming that when he shifts into fifth his foot is pretty far down on the gas, and even if the engine isn't revving high he is still using a lot of gas, more than if you were to use the gears for what they are there for.

As far as powershifting goes, maybe we can get the opinion of expirienced drag racers. Personally I see no benefit apart from spinning your tires, which personally I find goofy in a FWD car smile . If you are powershifting without hitting the rev limiter then you are shifting too low in the rev range. If you powershift with the revvs up high then you run into the rev limiter.

Smartest thing to do is a variation of what Demon was describing, without grinding of course! eek
