Well problem solved. I took it to Capital Ford here in Raleigh and it took a few days longer (a whopping 2) but after all was said and done, it was indeed the starter. I asked them about wiring and electronics and they them first, but everything tested out ok so they replaced the starter. Total was about $320, $180 was for the starter and remainder being labor and testing (that I requested).
Actually it's less than I thought it would be and the car drove home just fine.
Next up is fuel pumped replacement and A/C fix, in that order.
But trackdays come first!!

Starters don't cost $180, and it is barely a 1 hour job. Jeez, I think I'll open a shop.

Brand new Ford starter would. And there were requests for other things to be tested too.

That's right, he did go to the dealership, probably why labor was so high also.

Try putting vise grips on them relly tight and on the accessory connection that goes to the fuse box too, you might have a slightly loose connection that can cause that

A rebuilt alt from o'rilleys is $175 and shop time is 2.2 hours according to alldata and my shop charges $76 an hour
so with tax and everything it's right around 360 give or take 20 bucks or so so it's about on par for a ford dealership.
