Hi all
I'm thinking about attempting a removal of my ECT Sender unit, but I'm not exactly sure what all is entailed, and even where it is. All I've gotten from the mechanic is that the ECT sensor is out of range (causing a CEL and studdering driving ocassionally).
I'm not a big DIY kinda guy, cuz I'm not that mechanically inclined. However this looks really easy to do, and would save me alteast 60 bux.
Could someone please tell me what I should do? Short of unplugging the sensor and removing it. I read somewhere that you have to flush the coolant? is that true?
thanks for any help. CEG has always helped me out, please help me out again
ALso if someone could confirm where it is located? I see it being at the back (firewall) of the engine. thats about the only thing I can see that looks similar. Well there is one on the drivers side that looks like it, but it doesn't have the same connector

Here is a post from Chongo. It highlights the ECT sensor.
The coolant temp gauge sender is the bronze (??) looking thing below the "Co" from the word coolant. Is that what you are talking about as the sender unit. If it is then if you do it real fast, unscrew and then plug (and screw) in the new one right away, you probably can get away with not having to drain the cooling system (according to Haynes). Haynes suggest to release the pressure by removing the coolant tank cap and then reinstalling the cap back (when the engine and coolant is completely cool). Hope this helps.

Let us know if (and how) you succeed. I planned to swap mine out, but after taking off the intake and throttle body, I still couldn't get to it. I could see it, but I couldn't get a wrench on it or get enough room to remove the electrical connection. It seemed to me that I'd have to remove some hard lines (either fuel or AC) to do it, and at that point I gave up.

its a bugger to get at, but you can do it with out removing much.
I just had to remove the air hose in which the moose fix is used (dunno the technical term), it runs from the UIM to the airbox.
a few quick turns and poof, out. I did loose a fair bit of coolant, so make sure you have something to catch it. or do it at night so noone sees you dumping Coolant into their sewers.
however, this did not fix my problem. I still have the CEL and my car is now hesitating at speeds below 3000 RPM.
at a loss as to what else this could be.

1) Not very environmentally conscious
2) Post the CEL if you have it.

did you reset the computer by pulling fuse 4 and 11?
Your car is probably still dealing with compensating for the old one.

yeh I need to get the CEL. All he gave me was the "meaning" of the cell, but I dont know which actual code it was.
as for resetting; no I didn't, he just cleared the codes and I went on my marry way. You think that would actually make a difference? I thought maybe i'd pick up the new sensor and be "sweet, back to normal"?

reset, drove, still hesitating. I'll wait for the CEL to come back on and when I can get my codes pulled, I'm moving all next week after work so I wont have time to do it. I'll have to live with it for now.

The CEL never came back. or atleast not yet. However the car is still stuttering at low speeds. some times it does, sometimes it doesn't. I cannot reproduce it, it just happens. I'm not sure whats causing this tho. its quite annoying as its killing my acceleration, which makes it scary to try and pass.
any thoughts?
oh yeah, under load its waaaay worst. with ac on and going up hill with weight, its HORRIBLE.
