I'm not a big fan of JVC either but I've never owned one of their higher end models. I would go with eclipse, alpine, or nakamichi.

I have an eclipse 5441 and have nothing but good things to say about it. I have also owned a nakamichi cd-35z and that thing sounded good, and looked reallllly good in the car. Too bad it didn't play burned cds very well, or cds that were scratched at all. My eclipse plays everything! Except mp3's on cds... which i don't really care about. I just hook up my ipod =)

Except as mentioned Bob competes with them, and has won several SQ championships with his JVC. I have personally heard his system and it certainly wouldn't discourage me from buying JVC.

I personally own a Pioneer 7300MP and I have been very happy with it over the past few years.
